Chords, Guitar Tablature & Lyrics

I think that there are two acoustic guitars in this one, playing pretty much the same chords. I'm going to show you the chords and offer a few tips. Be sure to visit my tab page in order to understand how I write tablature on the web.

TIPS:

A(1) and A(2) aren't chord names - these are just regular A chords - the 1 and 2 are to indicate which A chord POSITION to play when... When you see A(1), play in that position until you see A(2) and so on... Playing these in the right positions are pretty important in this song. See the chord fingerings above for the difference between the two chords.

When doing the A(1)...Asus4...A ... - do NOT hit the high E string! OR you can play the high string OPEN on the A chord - try it!

Ditto for the above when going from the G/A to A chords... ie, use that high E very sparingly on the A chord.

After playing this: A(1)...Asus4...A ..., and resolving to the G/A - make sure you pluck at least the high E string on the down beat of the G/A chord - this gives it a nice sound.

Please examine the ending of the two verses that I have typed below. Note that I have different 'A ' chord progressions going on. Actually they are both being used in each verse, but I opted to split it up for ease of writing. If you have two guitars playin' this thing - then each of you should take one version. The middle A chord (2nd or 9th) is played quickly in either case.

D E A(2) Asus2 A
D E A(1) A(add 9) A
who's to say a man cannot be king

The two harmonic notes (harmonic chimes) are played on the 7th fret of the 5th and 4th strings, respectively.

The ending has these chords:

G/A A G/A G/A(add 9) Asus2 A(2).

When playing the G/A(add 9) - play the 5 notes slowly, from the bottom string up and let each note ring!

When going from the Asus2 to the A chord, strum once - on the Asus2 then quickly press the additional note needed to form the A chord. (I play the A with fingers 2-3-4 rather than 1-2-3, this way it is easy to put the pinky down quickly to resolve the Asus2 to the A.)

Sounds best when finger pickin'!
Most of the pickin' in this song is done on the 2nd, 3rd, 4th, & 5th strings.
