Chords, Guitar Tablature & Lyrics
____________________________________________________________________________________

I think that there is one electric guitar playing in this song. There might be an acoustic guitar playing chords but I can't tell from the recording with the piano and mandolin playing chords. However, this is such a great song - it sounds cool when played on electric or acoustic guitar. I'm going to show you the chords and a little tab of the electric guitar single note stuff (but not the killer Randle Chowning lick during the chorus- I just can't figure it out! Help! Randy, are you out there?). Be sure to visit my tab page in order to understand how I write tablature on the web.

Click here if you want only the lyrics.

TIPS:

You can pretty much play any fingering you want to for any of the chords - I find that the fingerings that I have provided sound pretty good when playing solo on an acoustic guitar (Martin HD28-12). The chord positions that I have shown tend to let certain notes constantly ring for certain parts and to provide contrast between the intro, verse, chorus, and solo parts. If you wish to use my recommend fingerings, then please read on....

Watch out for the chord positions in this one. The same chord (eg. G, C) is fingered in different positions - depending if you are playing the intro, chorus, or verse.

When playing the INTRO:
Try not to play the first string. The gives the chord a sound closer to the inverted chords the pianist is playing.
_________

When playing the chords on the CHORUS:
Keep that high G ringing (1st string, 3rd fret) throughout all the chords.

If you want a challenge, you can play a little of the bass part (well, actually one note really)... When this part comes up:

G G/F# Em
Oh Coun-try Girl

Play the following chord along with the G and the Em chords (this gives the sound of the bass moving from the notes on the sixth string G to F# to E while the guitar would normally play only the G and E notes).

G/F#

1 -|| -----------------------4--------3
2 -|| --------0-----------------------0
3 -|| --------0-----------------------0
4 -|| --------0-----------------------0
5 -|| ---------------3----------------2
6 -|| ---------------2----------------2

_________

When playing the chords on the HARP SOLO:
Keep that high G ringing (1st string, 3rd fret) throughout all the chords. This can be done of course, only if you play the F(add 9) chord and the other recommended chord positions. Try it - it sounds pretty cool.

_________

Walking notes:

Trying playing some - these are just single notes that you play to lead you from chord to chord... A couple of examples:

During the VERSE, after you strike the D chord but before you strike the C chord, you can follow the bass line and play these four 'walkin' notes along with some crazy D (and altered G) fingerings...:

      D                            C
1 -|| ---2-------------------------0
2 -|| ---3-------3------3------3---1
3 -|| ---2-------2------0------0---0
4 -|| --0-------0------0------0---2
5 -|| ----------3------2------0---3
6 -|| -----------------------------

(The walking notes are in bold)

Another example is when transitioning from the HARP SOLO to the VERSE, you can play these notes when changing from the last G chord in the solo to the C chord in the next verse...:

      G                 C
1 -|| 3-----------------0----------
2 -|| 0-----------------1----------
3 -|| 0-----------------0----------
4 -|| 0-----3---2---0--2-----------
5 -|| 2----------------3----------
6 -|| 3----------------------------

(The walking notes are in bold)

The Electric Guitar single string stuff is something like this during the verse:

      C                    G
1 -|| -----------------------------------------
2 -|| -----------------------------------------
3 -|| ----------------0------------------------
4 -|| -----------0h2---------------------0-----
5 -|| ---3----3---------------------0h2--------
6 -|| ----------------------3----3-------------
Beat: 1 2 + 3 4 1 2 + 3 4

I think that you get the idea - just hammer and use walking notes....
